Motorcycles are popular with many of our members, but if you are new to riding, how do you choose which motorcycle is right for you?
A good place to start is to check how much different models weigh. The weights should be listed on the manufacturer’s website. If you are less inclined to lift heavy objects, it may be wise to pass on that heavy cruiser.
Let’s look at 3 main types and what type of rider is drawn to each.
These are specifically designed for covering long distances with large-capacity fuel tanks and a relaxed, upright seating position. You can ride alone or with a partner and there’s room for storage. Touring bikes are great for riders who want to get out and explore Colorado and take weekend long trips. (or longer!)
You’re already thinking Orange County Choppers, Harley Davidson or Sons of Anarchy – and you’d be right. Cruisers are designed so you won’t need to shift as frequently. The riding position places the feet forward and the hands are up relatively high, so your back is straight or even leaning back a bit. At low to moderate speeds, cruisers are pretty comfortable, but riding for a long period of time can be tiresome when you’re pulling back on the handlebars to resist the force of the wind. Furthermore, cruisers are not adept at turning since they sit so low to the ground.
Do you look forward to curvy roads and short weekend trips? Sport motorcycles = high performance. When you are looking to maximize the features like speed, acceleration and handling and willing to overlook not so spectacular gas mileage, a sport bike is your best bet. You will be leaning forward into the wind, which is great for high speeds but your wrists will be feeling strained when you’re zipping around for long periods of time.
Take into account whether you’ll be riding solo, what type of bikes your friends ride, and how much time you’ll have to spend on your bike. With Colorado’s coveted landscapes and the potential to ride all year long, buying a motorcycle is a completely realistic, adult thing to do.
